Civil War Prisoner Exchange
Let Dr. Fovielle take you back to 1865 when 8,684 Union soldiers were exchanged for an unknown number of confederate prisoners of war.
2 cruises ~ 9am & 12pm Dr. Fonvielle will discuss how Wilmington fell to the Union troops under the command of Maj. Gen. J. M. Schofield on February 22, 1865. And how on the following day word was sent to his Confederate counterpart, Gen. Robert F. Hoke, that he was prepared to receive prisoners of war at the crossing of the Northeast Cape Fear River, on the main road from Wilmington to Goldsborough. We will be cruising 25 miles up from Wilmington to Castle Hayne. Returning to Wilmington by shuttle with a second group arriving to cruise back down to Wilmington Once at our destination & in the spirit of tradition and for fun we will transfer our passengers in the form of a “Prisoner Exchange.”
